Metabolic surgery is proven weight loss method for the person who is seriously overweight.
The three main surgery types performed in Australia are the adjustable gastric band (often called a lapband), sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve), and roux en Y gastric bypass (RYGB or shortened to gastric bypass).
A few other surgical procedures are less commonly offered and performed in Australia.
These include mini-gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion (BPD with or without duodenal switch) or bypass surgery, combination procedures (e.g. adjustable band placed over a previous RYGB or sleeve), omega loop, and more experimental procedures such as gastric plication.
Older surgeries for weight loss that are no longer performed include jaw wiring, stomach staples and fixed gastric rings.
